Abstract

Sociological naturalism is highly criticized by many researchers in social sciences. This approach is especially accused of being reductionist, as it would seek to explain complex social phenomena on the sole basis of biological or (neuro) cognitive processes. In this thesis, we explore the hypothesis that cognitive science may shed new and complementary light on classical topics in sociology while avoiding this specific kind of reductionism. We will argue that knowledge from the cognitive sciences can help sociologists to better understand some causal mechanisms contributing to the formation of the social phenomena they are interested in. In this context, explanations provided by the cognitive sciences are integrated into sociological explanations, and social phenomena are by no means reduced to processes described in (neuro)cognitive terms.
