Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to introduce the interested reader—especially healthcare
professionals, students, and researchers working on healthcare issues—to the ethical aspects
of psychotherapeutic interventions in palliative care. In the first part, we will present the
major forms of interventions that are currently employed to help palliative care patients
with psychotherapeutic needs and discuss the question of indication for these interventions.
In the second part, we will show how closely psychotherapy and ethics are linked, especially
at the end of life. In the third part, finally, we will give an overview of the various specific
ethical questions that arise in psychotherapeutic interventions in palliative care, structured
according to the heuristic principles of biomedical ethics: beneficence, non-maleficence,
respect for autonomy, and justice.
