Abstract
Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) after continuous flow left ventricular assist device (CF- LVAD) implant decreases quality of life, physical exercise capacity, and increases mortality. More recently, gated-blood pool SPECT with TOMPOOL-analysis tomographic-equilibrium radionuclide ventriculography (t-ERV) was validated by multi-slice detector computer tomography for measure of RV end-diastolic volume (RVEDV) and ejection fraction (RVEF). This observational study applied for the first-time t-ERV for serial follow-up after CF-LVAD implant. A total of 20 CF-LVAD patients had six t-ERV exams before CF-LVAD implant and 50 exams thereafter. Serial follow-up showed more important change of RVEF and RVEDV when comparing pre- with post-implant RV size and function. Overall, 13 study participants showed RVEF stability or improvement, while 7 patients showed decline of RVEF. This observational study shows that t-ERV permits individual patient follow-up of after CF-LVAD implant.
