Notes
PURPOSE/AIM : To present the different indications of UCAs for renal investigations and to emphasize the situations where UCAs are a particularly relevant alternative imaging modality regarding the contra-indications of iodinated or gadolinium-based contrast agents.
CONTENT ORGANIZATION : Reminder on UCAs, advantages in case of renal insufficiency. Reminder on technical requirement for contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS). Vascular applications of UCAs (detection of renal arteries, identification of dissection, analysis of parenchymal perfusion), comparison with conventional US, CT and MRI. Non-vascular applications of UCAs (characterization of focal masses, assessment of trauma, monitoring of local ablative treatment), comparison with conventional US, CT and MRI.
SUMMARY : 1. To provide an in-depth review of highly relevant and less relevant indications of UCAs for renal investigations in a general population. 2. To emphasize the possibilities of UCAs as an alternative imaging technique in cases of severe chronic kidney disease.
