Abstract
In this chapter, we adopt Spokane and Oliver’s (1983) definition of career or vocational intervention as “any treatment or effort intended to enhance an individual’s career development or to enable the person to make better career-related decisions” (p. 100). We focus on interventions aimed at facilitating individuals’ career decision making, using a decision theory–based viewpoint. In the first section, we review three core facets of individuals’ career decision making that should be evaluated to tailor career interventions to the specific needs and characteristics of each individual. In the second section, we introduce the theoretical foundations of the career decision-making perspective and describe a prescriptive career decision-making model—the prescreening, in-depth exploration, and choice (PIC) model. In the third section, we demonstrate an Internet-based career-planning system (i.e., Making Better Career Decisions) that facilitates career decision making and is based on this model. In the last section, we present a case study illustrating how the proposed assessments and Making Better Career Decisions can be implemented in career counseling, and we end by highlighting the unique features of our approach.
