Abstract
As the lack of business ethics is increasingly seen as a threat to sustainable business practices, creating and maintain good relationships between businesses and their stakeholders over a period of time that exceeds the quarterly results is one of the main challenges in the current business networks. Relationships and interactions in this network can be modeled as a problem from game theory. Traditional solutions to these problems include changing the rules of the game through adequate regulations that would favor cooperation over defection. In this preliminary study we build on recent advancements in evolutionary game theory that suggest that the structure of the network influences cooperation. In the context of open innovation, we propose to extend the prescriptive contingency view of organizational decision making with a design model for information systems to structure relationships among firms and stakeholders to tilt the game towards cooperation, we call these systems cooperation support systems. We illustrate this theory with examples.
