Clinical investigation of pseudo-hermaphrodism shows, beyond its specificity, the extent to which subjective assumption of sex is irreductible to its determinants, be they biological or related to gender identity. One cannot put aside the subject's choice, which at times go beyond processes of identification or attribution. This is revealed through clinical practice. Its teachings, though always particular, coincide with contemporary controversies raised in patients associations or subversive movements surrounding issues concerned with gender. So it is that the treatment of children and their parents while still being confronted with biological data must be scrutinized through the irreductible subjective contingency to which it has to be referred. Sexual difference is clear, in regard to which everyone is a mixture according to his/her identifications and object choices.
