The hereby PhD thesis is part of the ERC-ARTIYISM project led by Prof. Monika Salzbrunn at the University of Lausanne (htlps://erc-artivi m.ch/). The dissertation investigates carnivals and festive events as m1istic means of political expression. lt does so by adopting an anthropological and ethnographic perspective. Research was conducted in the Greater Region of Nice between 2016 and 2020. The work builds on one main question: how carnival creativity and performances a11iculate the concept of political pa11icipation, which has become uncertain and thus in need of new analytical elaborations to understand its current meaning in our society - and what are the outcomes of such festive events? This main question was articulated around four sub-questions, to understand 1) whether creativity can be mobilized as a socio-political resource, 2) the ways people's agency is conveyed through creative practices, 3) whether creativity has socio-political effects and 4) which are the individual and collective effects of the participation in carnival and festive events.
The adoption of an event-based approach (Salzbrunn, 2014a, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021) focused on carnival and festive events, together with the combination of multisensory and multimodal methods of inquiry, suggests new understandings and articulations of the concept of "political" and "political pm1icipation" in urban contexts. These new understandings drew particularly on literature on performance and (collective) performativity (Butler, 2015; Bogad, 2010, 2016, 2016a), and an affective (Duncombe, 2016) reading was crucial to grasp the individual and collective effects generated by the participation in carnival and festive events.

La thèse étudie les carnavals et les événements festifs en tant que moyens artistiques d'expression politique. Pour ce faire, elle adopte une perspective anthropologique et ethnographique. La recherche a été menée dans la région de Nice entre 2016 et 2020. La thèse s'articule autour d'une question principale : comment la créativité et les performances carnavalesques articulent-elles le concept de participation politique, qui est devenu incertain et nécessite donc de nouvelles élaborations analytiques pour comprendre sa signification actuelle dans notre société occidentale ? Cette question principale a été articulée autour de quatre sous-questions, afin de comprendre 1) si la créativité peut être mobilisée en tant que ressource socio-politique, 2) comment l'agentivité des personnes est véhiculée par les pratiques créatives, 3) si la créativité a des effets socio-politiques et 4) quels sont les effets individuels et collectifs de la participation aux événements carnavalesques et festifs. L'adoption d'une approche événementielle (Salzbrunn, 2014a, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021) centrée sur les événements carnavalesques et festifs, ainsi que la combinaison de méthodes d'enquête multisensorielles et multimodales, suggèrent des nouvelles compréhensions et articulations du concept de" politique" et de " pm1icipation politique " dans les contextes urbains. Ces nouvelles compréhensions s'appuient notamment sur la littérature sur la performance et la performativité (collective) (Butler, 2015; Bogad, 2010, 2016, 2016a), et une lecture affective (Duncombe, 2016) était cruciale pour saisir les effets individuels et collectifs générés par la participation aux événements carnavalesques et festifs.
