Abstract
The term drug-induced hypomania refers to a psychopathological picture characterised by the presence of elevated mood with other hypomanic symptoms whose onset is temporally related to the initiation of a pharmacological compound. Both concerning its clinical status and its nosological position, drug-induced hypomania deserves further attention from researchers, as different open questions remain to be clarified. Two areas are still open to research: 1. The proper clinical and diagnostic description of hypomanic states (both spontaneous and drug-induced, mainly with regard to a proper differentiation from manic states), and 2. Whether drug-induced hypomania is a peculiar condition where the pharmacological compound is etiologically related or whether it is just a hypomanic episode triggered by a drug in a predisposed subject. In the present paper we will review literature data on these two topics and we will underline different opinions.
