Abstract
Status epilepticus (SE), refractory status epilepticus (RSE) and superrefractory status epilepticus (SRSE) are very severe medical conditions with high mortality and a potentially poor outcome in several surviving patients. Although SE, RSE and SRSE are primarily neurological affections, these patients will be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) for critical care, most often mechanical ventilation and general anesthesia. When a patient enters RSE or even SRSE, his/her stay in the ICU may become longer and neurologists and ICU specialists will have to agree on whether or not it is appropriate to continue critical care.
