Abstract
The Aptian stage and especially its lower part witnessed one of the major phases of paleoenvironmental change from the whole Cretaceous - the Selli episode. This episode introduced the changes that left their irreversibly mark on platform successions, often by their complété disappearance in the study area. The main objective of this project is to highlight the évolution of the northern Tethyan platform into a broader perspective of paleoenvironmental change. In order to attain this aim, a sériés of key sections were examined and sampled along the former Tethyan margin.
Nearly 70 sections, including 55 sections figured in this thesis for the platforms of Languedoc, Jura, and Helvetic, were investigated over nearly 1000 km between the Nice Arc (SE France) and Bavaria (Southern Germany). These sections reveal a succession of eight sedimentary and biological events punctuating the sedimentary record on the northern Tethyan margin during the Aptian. These eight events are each characterized both by a sedimentary discontinuity, as well as by an ecosystem modification. Three of them are considered as major events because they were accompanied by significant changes in Aptian sédimentation pattern, and by the appearance of laminated organic-rich muds (LOM) in the basin. A first change occurred in the early Aptian (Forbesi Zone) with an abrupt transition from oligotrophic to mesotrophic carbonate-producing ecosystems following a major sedimentary discontinuity. A second change took place during the early Aptian (uppermost Furcata Zone) with the complété disappearance of ramps, also marked by a sedimentary discontinuity. However, a heterozoan carbonate platform reappeared for a short time in the late Aptian (lowermost Nodosocostatum Zone). A third change was recorded in the terminal Aptian (uppermost Nodosocostatum Zone) with a very important sedimentary discontinuity definitively putting an end to the carbonate ramps. Each of these sedimentary and ecological changes is accompanied by a faunal modification, in particular among ammonites (radiations, extinctions, turn-overs). The Aptian is also characterized by an amplification of syn-sedimentary tectonics. Already relatively active during the late Barremian, their impact is increased on platforms bordering the Vocontian basin by a generalization of normal faults and by significant strike slip faults with SW-NE and NS axes.
Thus, during the early Aptian, the carbonate platform suffered a demise in successive steps and a brief return in the late Aptian, before disappearing on the long term until the Eocene. Important ecological changes were related to the replacement of oligotrophic faunas by heterotrophic faunas, which were better adapted to the emerging new conditions. These changes are associated with increased upwelling, phosphogenesis, and primary productivity preserved in numerous LOM intercalated into the Apto-Albian sériés. These new conditions are interspersed with periods of restrictions and extinctions punctuating the Albian-Aptian period. Important paleogeographical changes are also recorded by both extensive as well as compressive syn- sedimentary tectonics, linked to the anti-clockwise rotation and sliding of the Apulian and Iberian microplates, which created both expansion or bulging phenomena in parts of the basin, as well as the sliding of wide compartments of the European plate.
The Aptian was also marked by major climatic changes, which significantly amplified especially in this part of the Tethys, affecting ecosystems in their totality. An accélération of the breakup of Pangaea, associated with the formation of a multitude of rift basins, the intensification of crustal spreading and the formation of large marine basaltic plateaus, led to significant climate changes similar to those observed nowadays, which are marked by sea level rise, by global warming, and by the massive release of greenhouse gases.
