Abstract
A strong association between finger representations and number processing has been well documented
in the literature. This paper describes the main studies in this area and asks the question
about the nature of such relationship. Indeed, a recurrent interrogation is whether finger use is
necessary or simply useful for the development of numerical abilities. In order to shed light on this
question, the detailed results of a study conducted in children with hemiplegia, who experience
difficulties in using their fingers, are also presented. Taken together, researchersâeuro? conclusions support
the view that fingers constitute a useful rather than a necessary tool for the construction of
numerical skills.
