Abstract
Huntington’s disease(HD)iscentrallycharacterizedbymotor,neurocognitiveandpsychiatricsymptoms,
but impairedemotionaldecodingabilitieshavealsobeenreported.However,morecomplexaffective
abilities arestilltobeexplored,andparticularlyempathy,whichisessentialforsocialrelationsandis
impaired invariouspsychiatricconditions.Thisstudyevaluatesempathicabilitiesandsocialskillsinpre-
clinical andclinicalHD,andexploresthedistinctionbetweentwoempathysub-components(emotional-
cognitive).Thirty-sixHDpatients(17pre-clinical)and36matchedcontrols filled intheEmpathyQuo-
tient Scale,whilecontrollingforpsychopathologicalcomorbidities.AttheclinicalstageofHD,noglobal
empathyimpairmentwasobservedbutratheraspecific deficit forthecognitivesub-component,while
emotional empathywaspreserved.Adeficit wasalsoobservedforsocialskills.Pre-clinicalHDwasnot
associated withanyempathydeficit. Emotionaldeficits inclinicalHDarethusnotlimitedtobasic
emotion decodingbutextendtowardscomplexinterpersonalabilities.Thedissociationbetweenim-
paired cognitiveandpreservedemotionalempathyinclinicalHDreinforcestheproposalthatempathy
subtypes aresustainedbydistinctprocesses.Finally,theseresultsunderlinetheextentofdistinctaf-
fectiveandsocialimpairmentsinHDandtheneedtograsptheminclinicalcontexts.
