Abstract
This article focuses on how contemporary writers such as Isabelle de Charrière and Mary Wollstonecraft addressed the politically enlightened but male-centred definition of "humanity" in their writings. It invites us, also, to consider the different ressources available in either French or English: these producing different effects and constraints when it came to writing about the humanity of women and imagining female characters differently.
