Every 5 years, the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions conduct a survey about quality-of-work issues. The interviews for the last survey were performed in the late 2005 with nearly 30 000 workers in 31 countries. Switzerland took part for the first time to this survey. The Institut de Santé au Travail is a member of the Swiss consortium performing in-depth analysis of the data. Our involvement is focused on health and work issues but the survey also covers the following dimensions: • Work organization • Working time • Equal opportunities • Training • Health • Well-being and job satisfaction The EWCS uses a multi-stage random sampling conducted on nationally representative samples of the total EU countries. People who did not speak one of the national languages were excluded. Only people employed or self-employed were included. More than 1000 people participated in Switzerland. Interviews were carried-out at the respondents' place of living. The results will enable work issues to be compared between Switzerland and other EU countries. They will also give important information about Switzerland's occupational health issues.
