Français : L’agnotologie est « l’étude de l’ignorance ». Ce mot, d’usage récent (fin des années 2000), a été proposé par des historien·nes pour désigner un champ de recherche qui a pour but d’examiner et de catégoriser les différentes formes de non-savoir. Les spécialistes de l’agnotologie considèrent en effet qu’il ne suffit pas d’étudier comment on produit des connaissances. Il faut symétriquement s’intéresser à la fabrique de l’ignorance, à ses dynamiques, à ses composantes sociales, politiques, culturelles. La démarche de l’agnotologie implique de mettre en cause la définition classique du clivage entre science et ignorance. Elle pose que, loin d’être des concepts antinomiques, il s’agit de deux principes complémentaires et intrinsèquement constitutifs du rapport au savoir. Outre qu’elle jette donc un nouvel éclairage sur des enjeux d’ordre épistémologique (qu’est-ce
que le non/savoir), l’agnotologie conduit aussi à penser l’ignorance comme un fait social, à géométries et à usages variables. Toutefois, comme le montre le développement apporté par ce chapitre, l’appropriation du terme par certains milieux (universitaire, politique, médiatique) s’est cependant parfois accompagnée d’une forme de distorsion. Alors même que les premiers travaux sur l’agnotologie bousculaient une certaine vision idéalisée des sciences en soutenant que l’ignorance est un élément central de l’activité savante, la diffusion du mot s’est traduite par une reconduction du partage entre « vraie » et « fausse » science. En laissant supposer que l’ignorance serait seulement façonnée par des acteurs extérieurs aux sphères de la science, ce glissement sémantique exprime, en creux, une potentielle hiérarchisation des savoirs en fonction de leur plus ou moins grande distance aux institutions scientifiques dominantes.
English: Agnotology is "the study of ignorance". This word, in recent use (late 2000s), was proposed by historians to designate a field of research that aims to study and categorise the different forms of non-knowledge. Specialists in agnotology believe that it is not enough to study how knowledge is produced. One must also be concerned with the production of ignorance, its dynamics and its social, political, and cultural constituents. The agnotological approach challenges the classical definition of the divide between science and ignorance. It argues that, far from being antinomic concepts, these two principles are complementary and intrinsically constitutive of the relationship to knowledge. In addition to shedding new light on epistemological issues (what is non-knowledge?), agnotology also leads us to think of ignorance as a social fact with variable geometries and uses. However, as is shown in this chapter, the appropriation of the term by certain circles (academic, political, media) has sometimes been accompanied by a form of distortion. Although the first works on agnotology challenged a certain idealised vision of the sciences by arguing that ignorance is a central element of scientific activity, the spread of the word has led to a renewal of the division between 'real' and 'false' science. By implying that ignorance is shaped only by actors outside the spheres of science, this semantic shift expresses a potential hierarchy of knowledge according to its greater or lesser distance from the dominant scientific institutions.
