Abstract
In addition to its gas exchange function the lung plays an important part in the regulation of homeostasis and response to injury. The defence mechanisms of distal airways and the role of the interstitium and of metabolic function are summarized. Based on the observations made in animal studies, the possible clinical implications of disturbances of these functions are outlined.
