Abstract
In the light of the recommendations recently made by the Institute of Medicine, the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the Endocrine Society, this article presents the practical aspects of how to supplement vitamin D in the population aged over 60. In this population, a minimal intake of 600 IU (from 50 to 70 years of age) and 800 IU (over 70) of cholecalciferol per day is recommended. However, up to now it has not yet been established whether these doses are sufficient to attain all the potential and beneficial effects of vitamin D on non-skeletal health.
