Abstract
We derive expressions relating the physical properties of plate interfaces to the propagation velocity of slow slip earthquakes. This relationship, analogous to the classical Stokes velocity of a rising buoyant sphere, resolves the intermediate velocity enigma and implies that the effective viscosity is low, the permeability is high, and the migration direction of episodic tremor and slip events provides constraints on the mean stress gradients inside active plate boundaries.
