Abstract
The premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as a amenorrhoea with elevated levels of serum gonadotropins before the age of 40. It occurs in 1% of women. The aetiology of this disorder is still unknown in the majority of cases. Generally, ovarian failure is an irreversible state but there are examples of spontaneous recovery and fertility in such cases. The initial concern of patients with POF is the need for hormone replacement therapy to relieve sympPremature ovarian failure toms of estrogen deficiency, to maintain bone density and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The psychological aspect is important to consider. Ovum donation is the effective treatment for women with POF who desire a pregnancy and who can accept the idea of donated gametes. Nevertheless this procedure will be not allowed in Switzerland
