Abstract
This article starts by summing up the three main versions and present interpretations of a temple (Jagannath temple, Odisha) origins, goes back in time to trace the colonial history of these interpretations, and then connect it with present socio-political positions. It is published in a special issue addressing African and Indian cases of "postcolonial uses of colonial" archive/library.
