This book is based on the observation that the small metal find assemblages are often poorly understood because of the multitude of compositions present in the Late Iron Age and the need to consider numerous interpretive possibilities. Questions on the subject led to the development of a methodology for a better understanding of these assemblages.
The oppidum of Corent appeared to be an ideal framework in which to carry out such research because it permitted a great number of artefact ensembles to be confronted with a large variety of contexts. The excavation zone, extending over more than three hectares, allows the identification of various buildings comprising the Gaulish town centre: the town’s sanctuary, public spaces, meeting places and several residential zones. In effect, these architectural spaces imply a broad field of activities reflected by the small metal finds. Based on this supposition, the research has been thus conceived as process of passing back and forth between the small finds and the information from the find places, in order that they mutually contribute to a better interpretation of the activities and the site.
