In this doctoral thesis, the compiling styles and stratégies of three late médiéval devotional texts that function as case studies will be examined: A Talkyng ofthe Love of God (A Talkyng), the Pore Caitif and The Tretyse of Love (The Tretyse). Even though these three texts are defmed and grouped together as Middle English 'devotional compilations' - devotional texts that are composed of older source texts to form a new text - they are in fact three différent types of compiled texts. The purpose of this doctoral project is to examine how these différences can be described and whether the compiling stratégies employed in A Talkyng, the Pore Caitif and The Tretyse can be linked to the texts' purpose and function. The thesis argues that the activity of compiling is more than selecting différent source texts and putting them together. Research on compiled texts can furthermore move beyond describing the additions, omissions, and other types of adaptations that compilers made to their source texts. This doctoral thesis reflects on the nature of these changes by using the concepts 'responding', 'collecting', 'reshaping', and 'mediating' in order to study the effects of compiling activity.
