Abstract
INCREASING FAMILY CAPITAL: THE DE PURY FAMILY FUND IN NEUCHÂTEL (1770-1920) – This article explores a little-known aspect of the social self-reproduction of Switzerland's great patrician families: the Family Funds – "Caisses de Famille". From their creation during the Ancien Régime, these financial institutions made it possible to accumulate and increase collective capital through profitable market transactions. The income they generated was invested in the education and skills of their young descendants, particularly through stays abroad. They have also been involved in local philanthropy, often linked to family interests. The specific case of the "Caisse de Famille de Pury", in Neuchâtel, is examined here using the family's accounting records over a 150-year period, from 1770 to 1920. Based on both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the author shows that the financial, educational and charitable strategies developed by this "Caisse" constituted a homogeneous action aimed at increasing and perpetuating the tangible and intangible capital of the de Pury family over time and space.
