Digital technology has permeated almost all aspects of social life, such as the way how we communicate, plan activities, do business, or spend our leisure time. But has politics kept up with and adapted to this new development? Regular consumers of the news will probably answer "not so good". While society and business are in the process of reinventing themselves, it looks like politicians, electronic campaigning and electioneering aside, are reluctant to embrace the issue. Alongside explaining what distinguishes digitalization from computerization, this chapter discusses two modes "the politics of digital government" and provides a critical reflection and discussion on the opportunities and possible risks of bottom-up or top-down digitalization strategies.
