Abstract
Jacques Sandoz, a notary and wigmaker from La Chaux-de-Fonds (Principality of Neuchâtel), kept a diary for more than twenty years (1693-1715). It served both as a record of events that Sandoz perceived as memorable and as a self-disciplining tool. The diary contains more than 30 dreams, which are all edited as an appendix to this paper. The article observes the place of these dreams in Sandoz’s diary, discusses the reasons why he decided to write them down, and briefly analyses their content. The study of Sandoz’s dreams in the broader context of his diary demonstrates that there are certain parallels between parts of the dream content and Sandoz’s waking life. Notably, this study shows a link between the remembrance of dreams and current life stressors, which echoes Antti Revonsuo’s theory of the threat simulation function of dreams.
