Le terme « Grèce libre » se réfère aux institutions politiques, judiciaires et sociales que les communistes grecs ont mises en place dans les territoires contrôlés par l'Armée démocratique de Grèce pendant la Guerre civile (1947-1949). Les chercheur(e)s ont longtemps mis l'accent sur les aspects militaires et politiques de la Guerre civile grecque, en s'appuyant sur des sources primaires abondantes, et ont généralement négligé le pouvoir populaire mis en place par les communistes dans la campagne grecque. Ma thèse cherche à explorer le contenu politique et idéologique de cette initiative du Parti communiste grec en lien avec sa stratégie et sa tactique au cours des années 1940. En employant les outils de l'histoire politique et sociale, je soutiens que l'initiative pour la création d'une Grèce libre avec son propre État et ses propres institutions politiques a été dictée par les besoins de la guerre et non par un plan révolutionnaire élaboré par la direction communiste grecque. Sur la base de sources primaires inédites, ma thèse explore les formes du pouvoir populaire communiste et sa réception par les populations locales ainsi que sa résonance internationale.

Free Greece refers to the political, judicial and welfare institutions that the Greek communists implemented in territories controlled by the Democratic Army of Greece during the Civil War (1947-1949). Scholars to date have mainly emphasized on the military and political aspects of the Greek Civil War, relying on abundant primary sources, and have generally neglected the communist-led people's power implemented in the Greek countryside. My dissertation addresses the question of what entailed this initiative of the Communist Party of Greece and how its implementation was related to the Greek communists' strategy and tactics in the 1940s. Using the tools of political and social history, I argue that the initiative for the creation of a Free Greece with its own state and political institutions was dictated by the needs of the war and not by a revolutionary plan elaborated by the Greek communist leadership. Based on original archival material, my dissertation explores the forms of the communist people's power and its reception by the local populations as well as its international resonance.
