Abstract
We explore the role of leader personality and gender in self-other (dis)agreement (SOA) in ratings transformational leadership. Regarding personality, we study the Big 5 traits (i.e., Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Openness, Extraversion and Neuroticism) through a lens of self-other knowledge asymmetry, contending that some traits are more or less observable depending on the observer (i.e., self vs. others), resulting in discrepancies in SOA. Utilizing statistical methodologies not previously applied to this area of research, we support hypotheses predicting less SOA as leader Conscientiousness increases and greater SOA as Agreeableness and Neuroticism increase, though some of our hypotheses regarding how self- and other-ratings are affected by a given trait are not supported. Additionally, gender is revealed as an important factor in SOA, with female leaders exhibiting greater SOA than their male counterparts. Implications of these findings, limitations, and future research directions are provided.
