Abstract
Against the literary tradition of rustic novels, Émile Guillaumin proposes in The Life of a Simple Man a new way to describe the work of the land. As a farmer and author, he prioritises experience over observation, and his descriptions are part of a broader reflection on the peasant condition. Furthermore, examining the text’s genesis reveals similarities between the work of the soil and the work of the pen: Guillaumin trains himself as a writer through meticulous learning, described with terms borrowed from agricultural work.
