Abstract
Ainune, or, Loved from far away and at first sight? Narrated love casuistry in a thirteenth-century fragment, with an edition and translation
This article examines the fragment of a courtly narrative about a queen called Ainune from the second quarter of the thirteenth century. The fragment, which has hitherto scarcely been studied at all, is explored with respect to its transmission, narrative structure, subject matter, and genre classification in order to position it, as far as the fragmentary state allows, within the context of literary and discourse history. The results suggest a verse novella in which a love-theory casus is presented in narrative form. Structural analogies to Old Occitan and Old French dialogic lyric poetry, such as the partimen or jeu-parti, are identified. The article is accompanied by an edition of the surviving 314 verses, together with a Modern German translation.
