Le but de cet article est de mettre en relation une réflexion théorique portant sur le « sens » des mythes et le travail pratique auquel se livre Wagner lorsqu'il compose Tristan ou Parsifal. Le débat théorique dont il est question oppose l'analyse structurale des mythes proposée par Claude Lévi-Strauss à la démarche herméneutique que Paul Ricoeur estime indispensable à une pleine intelligence des grands mythes. Les grandes étapes du travail wagnérien sur les mythes (mise au jour d'un noyau irradiant, structuration dynamique, condensation, accroissement de la portée symbolique) sont abordées à la fois comme un travail intimement structural et comme une reprise du sens, au sens où l'entend Ricoeur.
The aim of this paper is to connect general theoretical thoughts about the meaning of myths with the specific Wagnerian approach to the myths of Tristan and Parsifal. In the theoretical debate, the structural method applied by Claude Lévi-Strauss is opposed to the hermeneutical approach that Paul Ricoeur sees as essential to a general interpretation of the major myths. The main steps of the Wagnerian approach to myths (1. uncovering of the kernel ; 2. dynamic construction ; 3. condensation ; 4. growth of the psychological density) are considered in this paper both as an intimately structural work, and in the light of what Ricoeur calls a "renewal of meaning" ("reprise du sens").
