Abstract
Non-Neoplastic conditions of the salivary glands range from various forms of inflammation to sialadenosis to reactive lymph nodes. Sialadenitis is the most common non-neoplastic condition, and includes acute or chronic sialadenitis as well as granulomatous disease. Depending upon the study, the risk of malignancy for aspirates of non-neoplastic salivary gland lesions is approximately 10%. While non-neoplastic conditions of salivary glands can on occasion mimic a neoplasm leading to a false positive diagnosis, the most problematic aspect is the possibility of a false negative diagnosis due to inadequate sampling.
