Dans Chinois d’Europe et Chinois d’Asie, publié en 1900, le journaliste et historien John Grand-Carteret propose une brève anthologie de la caricature des Chinois dans la presse occidentale. Cet article analyse dans un premier temps la présentation de la Chine dans le Nebelspalter restituée par Grand-Carteret. Il s’attache ensuite à compléter cette présentation centrée sur la seule année 1900 avec l’identification des années-clefs de la présence chinoise entre 1875 et 1952. La présence de la Chine dans le périodique satirique apparait nettement corrélée, d’une part au Japon ; de l’autre, à la thématique du péril jaune. On s’interroge pour finir sur la démarche de Grand-Carteret.
In Chinois d'Europe et Chinois d'Asie, published in 1900, the journalist and historian John Grand-Carteret offers a brief anthology of caricatures of the Chinese in the Western press. This article first analyses Grand-Carteret's presentation of China in the Nebelspalter. It then attempts to complete this presentation centred on the year 1900 with the identification of the key years of the Chinese presence between 1875 and 1952. The presence of China in the satirical periodical appears to be clearly correlated, on the one hand, with Japan and, on the other, with the theme of the yellow peril. Finally, Grand-Carteret's approach is examined.
