This contribution focuses on the French adverb là, a deictic word which has been extensively studied in French linguistics due to its variety of potential uses. It adopts a multimodal perspective in order to show that contrary to what has been mainly proposed in conversation analytic studies, its association with a pointing gesture does not necessary imply a spatial reference. Conversely, this study illustrates how this multimodal configuration might at times involve several semiotic functions of the deictic to refer to a situation as a whole. To show this, the study mobilizes a corpus of professional interactions held in French, which documents a complex ecology and is filled with various objects and technologies. This articles thus claims that the referential polyvalence of the deictic word là constitutes a praxeological resource that both reflects and makes sense of this semiotically-complex context of interaction.
