Résumé
Historiography has shown that seventeenth-century Protestants had an elective affinity for atomic theories because of their conflict with the catholic dogma of transubstantiation. But is there something more in the ‘way of thinking’ that atomism entails that appealed to Protestant thinkers? And more precisely to Calvinist theologians? Using the work of Reformed theologian David Derodon and its subsequent re-reading by Geneva physicist Georges-Louis Lesage, this article aims at sketching the outlines of a possible «Calvino-atomist style» arising from the meeting of atomistic and Calvinist theology. Beyond the controversy over the ‘real presence’ of Christ in the Eucharist, it is the more general question of the relationship between God and his Creation that governed the configuration of an ‘orthodox’ atomism.
