Mid September 1799, two Swiss tutors at the Russian Court, David-Louis Du Puget (1763-1838) and Jean-Victor de Sybourg (1759-1826), were put under arrest and sent in exile to Siberia for «illegal correspondence». Instead of analyzing this quite extraordinary moment in itself, this contribution asks about the situation of republican tutors at Court since the 1780’s for a better understanding of this event. Based on the tutors archives, it shows that the Swiss were particularly praised as well as clearly distinguished from the French. Focussing on the dangers that threatened them (or not) during the revolutionary era, it explains why only Frédéric-César de La Harpe was dismissed. And finally it argues that in a broader context the short exile of Du Puget and Sybourg rather confirms that the many Swiss Tutors at the Russian Court were supported by the Imperial family regardless of the political circumstances.
