Résumé
This chapter analyses the possibilities of Swiss sporting diplomacy in the context of isolation and re-integration of the loosers of World War I by considering the examples of football and ice hockey. In both disciplines there were Swiss initiatives for a re-establishment of sporting relations with Germany. Shortly after the end of the war, the first Swiss football clubs started to play German adversaries again, and as early as in the summer of 1920 there was a friendly international match, which however was met with indignation in Western Switzerland and nearly resulted in a schism of the Swiss Football and Athletic Association. In ice hockey, there were no international matches against Germany until 1928, however initiatives aiming at reconciling the former war enemies through club games started in Davos in 1923 and in Caux in 1926. In both disciplines, sporting diplomacy aiming at re-integration and reconciliation was conducted autonomously, yet its aims were in line with official Swiss foreign policy.
