La « première vague » de recherches sur l'animation d'images photographiques dans les années 1850-1860 provoqua difficultés et discussions dans l'historiographie du cinéma. Comment se fait-il que si tôt, une trentaine d'année avant sa réalisation effective concrète, et avant même l'émergence de la photographie instantanée comme technique acquise, se soient formulés des problèmes qui sont de fait si proches parfois de ce que fera plus tard le cinéma ? Et comment éviter, pour rendre compte de ces parallèles, la construction d'une histoire téléologique ? Après un bilan historiographique des débats (Sadoul, Bazin, Frizot, Gunning), l'article propose une élaboration basée sur le concept de problème tel qu'articulé par Gaston Bachelard et Gilbert Simondon dans l'histoire des sciences et des techniques. L'exemple du méconnu « Procédé d'enregistrement et de reproduction des couleurs, des formes et des mouvements » déposé par Charles Cros en 1867 est développé pour illustrer cette approche de l'histoire technologique par l'épistémologie des problèmes.
The « first wave » of researches on the animation of photographic images between 1850 and 1870 has been the objects of discussions in the historiography of cinema. How can it be that, some thirty years before the concrete realization of the cinema, and even before the advent of instantaneous photography, problems have been formulated that appear to be so close to what cinema will later do? And how can we avoid, to give a pertinent account of these parallels, the construction of a teleological history? After a historiographical synthesis of the debates (Sadoul, Bazin, Frizot, Gunning), the article proposes a hypothesis based on the concept of problem as it has been formulated by Gaston Bachelard and Gilbert Simondon in the history of sciences and technology. The example of Charles Cros's 1867 "Process for the recording and reproduction of colors, forms and movements", is developed to illustrate this approach of technological history through the epistemology of problems.
