In a variety of environmental problems, it is only the joint presence of several pollutants and their interaction that leads to environmental damage. If there are synergies between the pollutants the iso-damage curves will usually be convex and the most efficient form of pollution control may well consist of concentrating on reducing only a subset of pollutants. Efficient pollution control policies can be formulated only if the natural scientists provide economists with information on the available trade-offs.
In verschiedenen ökologischen Problemen führt erst das Zusammenwirken verschiedener Schadstoffe zu Umweltschaden. In solchen Situationen kann eine rationale Umweltpolitik erst dann formuliert werden, wenn die Naturwissenschaftler den Ökonomen Information über die resultierenden Isoschadenskurven zur Verfügung stellen. Bei Synergismen zwischen den Schadstoffen werden diese häuflg konvex sein. Es ist dann sinnvoll, sich insbesondere auf die Reduktion einiger weniger Schadstoffe zu konzentrieren.
