In the “Fool’s Speech” (2 Corinthians 10–13), Paul engages in a discourse of self that comes close to boasting. Moving away from the traditional issue of why, and for what purpose, Paul boasts about himself, this article explores the rhetorical role of interdiscourse in this self-praise. In fact, in chapters 10–13, Paul constantly refers to different discourses that circulate among the Christian community at Corinth, and whose authors are the so-called “super apostles” (i.e., Paul’s opponents): these discourses include mockeries of Paul, criticism of the collection for Jerusalem, the “opponents’ ” praise for their own behavior, etc. It will be argued that the rationale behind these multiple allusions to such discourses is precisely to create the opportunity for Paul to praise himself in a way that does not seem pretentious, through the creation of the discursive pattern of the “constraint to boast.”
