Résumé
Ethnics are a category of adjectives derived from the name of a people, region or locality. Attached to a personal name, they qualify an individual as a member of a social group linked to a place and organised or not as a political entity. This article examines the morphology and semantics of the ethnic names attested in Oscan, a group of languages related to Latin attested in central and southern Italy mainly between the 4th and 1st centuries B. C. The majority of Oscan ethnic names are adjectives of belonging formed by a °no- suffix from place names. They do not always express the political identity of the social groups they refer to. When they can be interpreted as such, it is often in official inscriptions that are likely to be read by readers external to the community which produced them. In Pompeii and Capua, the adjective túvtíks can be used as an equivalent of the ethnic to characterise certain local magistrates.
