Résumé
An electric impulse in a coil creates an intense transient magnetic field which can pass through organic structures without being modified. This is because different tissues of the body all have the same magnetic permeability and are transparent to the magnetic field. In the body, the magnetic field induces an electric current which causes nerve stimulation. If the coil is placed above the scalp, the intracranial motor pathways are stimulated and the compound action potential of the activated muscles can be recorded.
