Three plastic vases were recovered from tumulus 79 in the northeast necropolis of Abdera: 1) A plastic lekythos with protome of Aphrodite. The goddess is represented as anadyomene, with polos, fine veil and braids of flowers in the hair. preserved on the back is the body of the lekythos with red-figure decoration. It is dated to the late fifth century BC. 2) A plastic amphoriskos imitating a cockleshell. It is dated c. 400 BC-early fourth century BC. 3) A plastic lekythos with a winged and dancing female figure. She wears eastern garments and is performing the dance known as oklasma. The vase, as well as its two copies (one from Melos and one from phanagoreia), which were most probably made in the same mould, are dated to the early fourth century BC.
Perfume flasks in function and coroplastic works in technique, these vases were luxury objects used not as grave goods but also for libations of perfumes in the funerary rites. Moreover, the symbolism of their iconography and the place where they were found attest that a large number of plastic lekythoi were intended exclusively for mortuary use.
