Abstract
Thisthesis examines the governance and legalframework of sustainable commodity use. Given that thus far the regulotory framework of transnationol commodity activity had not been conceptualised as such, it storts by casting corresponding definitionol and conceptual bases.
First, it conceptualises Global Commodity Governonce (GCG) ond further chorocterises it by meons of a 'governonce motrix', which consists of the major interests ossociated with commodity activity: economic gain; development; preservation; control; and participation.
Second, it establishes Transnational Commodity Law (TCL) as the field of law covering transnational commodity octivity. tn o third step, it ossesses the effectiveness of TCL in fostering o functional commodity sector - the latter being one, which exhibits a balonce between the five commodity interests named above. For that purpose, it identifies a range of normotive potterns, which ore inherent to the current TCL framework. Fourth and last, it provides reflections on potential avenues to fostering the effectiveness of TCL. ln doing so, it, for one, demonstrates the operotion of the sustoinable use principle as the overoll object and purpose of TCL and, for the other, discusses woys to design lnternational Commodity Agreements (lcAs) de lege ferenda, which reinforce and expand the current regulatory fromework of GCG.
