Algorithmic decision-making from a gen- der equality perspective – a balancing act between the gender data gap, gender bias, machine bias and regulation
The article analyses to what extent algo- rithms enable or hinder the achievement of gender equality goals, especially con- sidering the phenomena of gender bias, machine bias and the gender data gap. The, mostly negative, consequences for gender equality will be explained drawing on the example of recruitment algorithms. However, it will also be shown to what ex- tent algorithms could be used specifically to achieve gender equality, for instance by using algorithms in positive action mea- sures and to detect discrimination.
