From the standpoint of the pediatrician, the new knowledges in perinatology allowed progresses in certain fields (identification of high risk pregnancies, decrease in perinatal mortality, decrease of major handicaps in high risk newborns). However, the new knowledge's did not improve the rate of preterm deliveries. Some aspects of antenatal and intrapartum fetal assessment as well as the postnatal evaluation of the newborn will be discussed.
