Abstract
L’article étudie la présence de procédés réflexifs dans la série Les Cités obscures, en particulier à travers une comparaison entre les deux versions du premier album, Les Murailles de Samaris. Dans ces albums de bandes dessinées qui privilégient dès leur titre, en tant que facteur de cohésion, des espaces urbains plutôt que les aventures de personnages, l’exhibition spectaculaire du monde tend à primer sur le récit. L’auteur montre comment la démarche réflexive de Schuiten et Peeters demeure solidaire de la construction mondaine. Même si certains motifs qui imbriquent texte et image renvoient à des caractéristiques du langage de la bande dessinée et sont traités de telle sorte qu’ils produisent un discours sur les possibilités du médium, l’immersion dans la fiction n’y est pas pour autant atténuée ; elle s’y voit même paradoxalement renforcée grâce à un jeu subtil avec la frontière entre le monde réel et le monde de la fiction qui confère à ce dernier un fascinant pouvoir d’absorption.
The article examines the presence of reflexive processes in the series Obscure Cities, in particular through a comparison between the two versions of the first album, Samaris. In these comic books, which already in their title give priority to urban spaces rather than to the adventures of characters, the spectacular exhibition of the world tends to prevail over the story. The author shows how Schuiten and Peeters' reflexive approach is not in contradiction with an emphasis on worldbuilding. Even if some motifs that intertwine text and image refer to characteristics of the language of comic books and are treated in such a way that they produce a discourse on the possibilities of the medium, immersion into the fiction is not attenuated; it is paradoxically reinforced by a subtle interplay between real world and the world of fiction, which gives the latter a fascinating power of absorption.
