The aim of this article is to propose a stabilized conceptualization of benevolence. The latter is considered here as a way of supporting the development of a vulnerable individual’s autonomy and of facing some of the challenges induced by the triumph of democratic individualism, particularly regarding education. To describe what a caring praxis could be, our definition distinguishes three dimensions: caring, caring for (or after), making sure. On this basis, the risks inherent to the application of care will be exposed and the ways to reduce those risks will be discussed. This will enable to clarify the distinction between care and the maternal aspect.
