Abstract
This invited contribution to the fifteenth-century volume of the new Oxford History of Poetry in English surveys developments in the love vision and in free-standing lyric poetry. It traces a development whereby Middle English authors increasingly evince frustration with traditional expressions of male desire and seek to invent new modes of writing that are capable of encompassing women’s wants, including the possibility of women’s same-sex desire.
