Abstract
The global obesity epidemic, rooted in excessive food consumption and sedentary lifestyles, has led to the urgent search of new treatments. New methods in psychotherapy like Mindfulness, Hypnotherapy, and DBT aim to address psychological aspects and treat obesity.
Methods: A comprehensive search in 3 databases identified studies on Mindfulness Based Interventions (MBI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), hypnotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in the treatment of obesity. A total of 23 articles where selected and analyzed. MBI studies (14 RCTs), mindfulness techniques focused on weight loss, employing various protocols like MBCT, MBSR and MB eat. Outcomes included BMI, weight, and psychometric measures, revealing improvements in stress and eating behaviors. Five hypnotherapy articles showed mixed results, indicating potential benefits for coping strategies, Quality of life, and weight loss, while four DBT papers suggested limited effectiveness in eating disorder psychopathology. This review suggests potential benefits of MBI, hypnosis, and DBT in obesity management, helping to cope despite inconclusive direct impact on weight reduction. Long-term, large-scale studies are needed, as well as exploring virtual approaches and comparing different methodologies for valuable insight.
